Biography

As Vice President of External Relations at AARP, Sarah guides communications strategy for the nation’s largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to empowering Americans over age 50 to choose how they live as they age.  With 20 years of media expertise, Sarah has worked with veteran correspondents on air and off to communicate some of the most pressing issues facing the nation.

She specializes in crisis communications, brand-building and communicating complex issues in simple terms and is battle-tested at the highest levels of public relations. Prior to AARP, Sarah led communications as Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and managed a team of 85 people driving earned, paid media and public engagement – including sensitive, high-stakes communications strategy at sub-agencies, such as CMS, FDA, CDC and NIH during a once-in-a-century global pandemic.

Sarah served as the lead communications strategist for a Cabinet Secretary, state attorney general, in senior leadership roles in the U.S. House and Senate and began her career working alongside the nation’s most seasoned reporters and columnists – including nearly a handful of years at The Washington Post. She is widely cited in national media, with appearances on TV and radio.
